The trouble with finding affordable software for your business

Kava Books team · August 22, 2026

Every freelancer and small business owner hits the same wall eventually: you need software to run your business, and the software costs more than you expected.

Take invoicing. It sounds like it should be simple: you did the work, you send a bill, someone pays you. But look at what it actually costs to do that "properly" with most tools on the market, and the picture gets murky fast. Plenty of full-featured invoicing platforms start around $20–$40 a month once you need more than a handful of clients, and that's before you've touched payroll, inventory, or anything resembling real accounting. For a freelancer sending a dozen invoices a month, that's a real chunk of revenue going to software before you've paid yourself.

The all-or-nothing problem

The deeper issue isn't just price. It's that most software is built for a business bigger than yours. You end up paying for double-entry bookkeeping, payroll modules, and inventory tracking you'll never touch, because the plan that has "just invoicing" doesn't really exist on its own. So you either overpay for a suite you don't need, or you cobble something together out of spreadsheets and hope you don't miss a follow-up on an unpaid invoice.

What we think should exist instead

We started Kava Books because we didn't want to choose between those two options. Invoicing (creating it, sending it, knowing when it's been seen, getting paid) is a complete, useful tool on its own. It doesn't need a general ledger attached to justify its existence. So that's all we built first: the core loop, done properly, priced like a tool for one person's business rather than a finance department's.

That's also why we're starting free for the first ten invoices, and why the next tier up is priced closer to a coffee subscription than a software budget line item. We'd rather earn the upgrade by being useful than lock the useful parts behind a price built for a bigger business than yours.

Affordable now, not just at launch

We're aware Kava Books does less than the big, established platforms today. We're early, and invoicing is where we're starting. But "does less" and "costs less" can both be true at the same time, and we intend to keep it that way as the product grows.

If that sounds like the invoicing tool you've been wanting, sign up. We'll let you know as soon as there's a spot open.
